Updated agenda for tonight. 6pm Turf Bar – on the sofas!

1. Club Meeting venues?

Suggestion: Rotating Roster of 3-4 times per year

Talking points: Informal?

DAVID: UOM: I’ve always had my best and most vigorous discussions in more informal atmospheres, so anything that allows that gets my vote for venue.

2. Frequency & Time?

Suggestion: Fortnightly – Mondays? or 2nd & 4th Monday?

DAVID: UOM: – I would say that with regards to guest speakers, that you have one actual “speech” a month/every two months, and the other times have a guest “chair”, something that naturally encourages audience collaboration and engagement.

3. Website ?

Hosted by 2thinknow? Question: How do we manage updates?

Suggestion: Maybe we go entirely paperless

Talking Points:

DAVID: UOM: – I think entirely paperless is the best option for nothing else in that it limits a lot of costs associated with groups like this that start small and grow quickly. When it comes to coordinating events, free services like http://www.mobaganda.com/ (my personal fav) help spread the word and manage responses (and Twitter of course). If 2thinknow have the space for it, I dont see why it shouldnt be housed there.

What sort of content is going to be offered – will it just be a dumping place of official documents/reference material?

Perhaps it can incorporate some sort of Ideas Board (kind of like the bollards one sees around the Uni these days, big poles with lots of posters and musings on them) and requisite link sharing.

CONVERSATION ??

4. Themes & Speakers?

Suggestion: David Scott – rotating themes

Talking points: Speakers engage with audience, peers based discussion, flat not top down, emphasize collaboration

DAVID: UOM: – As flagged in previous correspondence, I think rotating themes (and relevant speakers) are the best way to keep things focussed and moving, and it also means that the people likely to turn up are those who feel they can add to the discussion.

Have a guest “chair”, something that naturally encourages audience collaboration and engagement. Also is it worth setting modest aims at the start of each meeting/month/meeting cycle? Perhaps something achievable, something attainable, something of a dream (im thinking Rudd 2020 style here perhaps haha). Helps give a bit of conclusion to that cycle of issues/themes. (As a non-business mind I dont know how this sits alongside entreprenuership and commercialisation and the like…)

5. Life Members?

Suggestion: First 13 Founders life Members

DAVID: UOM: - Life members – necessary? Role now/future? (I suppose these will be worked out in relation to the constitution).

Thoughts: will encourage a chorum/sponsorship? maybe other way?

6. Member Rules?

Suggestion: Adopted constitution framework from similar clubs

Discussion: How to ensure collaboration long-term, broad range of interests, prevent narrow interests (pitches) /boredom/problems seen in other groups? [Don't get too hung up on this]

Talking points: What checks & balances? Separate out ‘The Pitch’ aka Gruen. Shooting down ideas banned unless you say “Plus”, “Minus”, “interesting”? (aka Edward De Bono)? maybe a jester? All IDEAS welcome!

DAVID: UOM: - Member rules…I think these need to be worked out once a constitution/modus operandi is laid out, that way it can all be referenced back in a nice clear cogent way. But I love the ‘plus’, ‘minus’ and ‘interesting’ idea.

7. Sponsors?

Suggestion: 2thinknow to provide board-room for Monday June 15th 2009, proposed date meetup.

Discussion: Who can provide a venue? Depends on numbers? Anyone provide drinks & nibbles?

8. Fees?

Suggestion: None. Free. Or Gold-coin donation on entry to cover admin – those not working /students/free!?

DAVID: UOM: - Like the gold coin donation fee – if nothing else it would help provide a token of something down the line to relevant sponsors/organisers. Always nice.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 19th 2009 9.30AM

In Melbourne today, 2thinknow announced the new Melbourne Innovation Club for Generation X & Y change agents, frustrated with a lack of opportunity for change in Victoria; first formal meeting of a soon-to-be-announced Steering Committee to be held Saturday 23 May, 2009 10.00AM.

“The purpose of this club is a open-source ethos: creation, collaboration & connection! Melbourne Innovation where the price of admission is ideas, and ideas alone! We welcome ideas people, creators, thinkers, doers, leaders! Race, Gender & Religion don’t matter. A more open, inclusive Generation X & Y club,” said, Christopher Hire, Executive Director of 2thinknow, Organizer of the Club.*

“2thinknow call Generation X & Y the Creative Generation – far more positive & reflecting the inherent strength of this generation!” Hire continued.

“Often known as Club-land, Melbourne Establishment often is more interested in your school tie than how good you idea is! We think that America has proven the value of twitter, Social media, Crowdsourcing, Collaboration, Green Tech, Clean Energy, New Ideas, Web 2.0, and in general, INNOVATION!” said, Christopher Hire, Executive Director of 2thinknow, Organizer of the Club.

“The result of Establishment closed door to ideas? Increasing frustration of Generation X & Y being excluded from opportunity and new economic opportunities globally. Global opportunities, 2thinknow believe could be applied locally. Currently, economic benefit of local ideas goes offshore in frustration.”

In covering Melbourne’s Future Summit, social commentator Duncan Riley wrote on leading site Inquisitr (http://www.inquisitr.com) that “we had a lot of old, mostly white people… talk about what has been, and what is happening now.” – capturing much of the sentiment of the lack of opportunity for Generation X & Y to create change in the face of an entrenched views.

“2thinknow’s aim in organizing the Melbourne Innovation Club is to create a generational alternative for Generation X & Y Ideas people from Business, Government & Community to collaborate and change Melbourne,” Hire said. “From a smart business view, we are expanding the market for local innovation and thus 2thinknow products & services. US, Canadian, UK & EU businesses get it! Grow the market, grow the business. Innovation is in ALL our interest!”

A new thinker, ideas person or innovator?

We’re forming a new thinkers group – in Melbourne for Generation X & Y creative thinkers committed to real change in Melbourne.

Collaborate.

There are so few outlets for real change. So let’s work, share, play, meet-up.

Ideas.

Inspire each other. Think.

Exclusive.

Not in the normal (Melbourne) sense. So you’re religion can be Jedi, hair can be blue, and who cares about who you’re sleeping with AND most especially, what school tie you wear.

And age-wise limited to the young & positive. We’ll have to vote on that.

We need you.

We need a chorum, a meeting place (rotating rosters), website (check), a drinks sponsor, and some more. But, let’s get together let’s do this thing.

The point is lasting change, real innovation Not more stale baby boomer ideas. Note more corporate ideas, or old-fashioned issues. Not more regurgitated slideshows on a podium.

A new web-enabled networked connected innovation club.

Let’s start here. Let’s form:

Melbourne Innovation Club.

Let’s change Melbourne. NOW.

Sounds Cool. In Melbourne or nearby? Gen X & Y? Frustrated with lack of innovation? Got ideas? Want to form a connected Club to promote, prosper, partner for innovation in Melbourne?

Let’s. Add your name below. We’re also looking for venue/boardroom on a rotating basis; and we have to collaborate to decide all the details to make this thing work! First step – add your name below.

Membership willbe by agreement, and there will be some (democratic, crowdsourced) rules to keep out self-promoters & bores, but we haven’t decided those rules – and need to collaborate!
